A joint agreement between four South Yorkshire Further Education colleges and Sheffield Hallam University is tackling the challenge of a skills gap across the region.

Following on from Level 3 studies, such as A levels or T Levels, new HTQs are Level 4 and 5 qualifications which provide higher national certificates, higher national diplomas and foundation degrees.

HTQs provide an alternative pathway to more secure, better paid, long-term careers not only for students over 18 years but also adults who want a change of career.

The digital version of HTQs was launched in September 2022, with a full roll-out to be completed by 2025 across 15 occupational sectors. They are therefore set to revolutionise education provision and bring the skills offered to learners in line with the demands of industry.

£1.3m funding supports delivery of HTQs

The Government’s Higher Technical Education Skills Injection Fund has given £1.3m for the new collaboration to deliver HTQs across the region.

HTQs at Level 4 and 5 will help learners across South Yorkshire who are currently taking T Levels and other Level 3 courses. It will also link them to the upcoming Lifelong Learning Entitlement and increase the awareness of HTQs across the region’s communities.

The new qualifications are backed by employers, meaning there is an assurance that they provide the skills needed in the workplace. They are also approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships & Technical Education, guaranteeing their high quality.

The same student finance options which are provided for Degree level study are also available, which will give learners further confidence to continue in education.
