Take a romantic stroll off the beaten track with Doncaster Ramblers

This two-and-a-half mile walk around Austerfield Old Quarry will take you off the beaten track, and at times may think you’re lost, but, rest assured, no getting lost here, writes Peter Rowsell, of Doncaster Ramblers.

Start at the fingerpost opposite the park and head up the short track towards a private gate. The footpath heads to the left.

After 120 metres, at a finger post pointing ahead, turn right and at a junction of paths head left and follow this as it winds through the silver birch, Bawtry Carbon Factory visible in the distance.

Continue for about 100m when the path turns left and you slowly reach the bottom of the quarry. Head towards a wire fence, then turn right and climb gently out of the quarry.

Follow the gravel footpath though a heavy metal structure and after about 300m, where the wide path turns right, take the narrower path left. This leads into a wooded area.

After 400m, turn right and follow the wider path left then after 150m right again as it narrows just as you exit onto High Field Lane.

Turn right onto the A614 and head into Austerfield.

Just by the Austerfield Study Centre take the footpath by the Mosaic Reserve sign keeping left of the wide track. After 300m come off the wide track and take a footpath left.

Follow this forested path for about 350m until reaching the wide path encountered on the outward journey. Turn left.

You will shortly recognise the gate encountered earlier, this time take the rising path to the left and follow for a few steps an official footpath but then dart right almost immediately and retrace your steps back to the start.

This 4.8 mile walk begins in Fishlake.

Start at the village green on Church Street and head to the corner of Church Lane. Turn right then left onto the Thorne Round Walk.

After 600m, the Thorne Round Way turns left, but carry on along the raised bank of the River Don for 1.2 miles where the road turns right to cross the river.

Turn left here to walk along Wood Lane where we again pick up the Thorne Round Walk/Peatland Way.

After 1,000m turn left then right after 380m. Continue along Geeseness Lane turning left on Sorrel Lane then left again onto Hayes Lane.

Follow this for 870m as it bends right to mee Pinfold Lane. Turn right along Pinfold Lane to the corner of Mill Field Road. Turn left.

Follow this for 300m then turn left onto East Field Road and continue until it becomes Trundle Lane. Turn right down Dirty Lane. Finally cross Main Street to take footpath left back to the start.
