Doncaster's first all-inclusive LGBTQIA+ bar set to open its doors later this year

Work is under way to transform a derelict bar in St George Gate into The Library – a two storey venue which is aimed at offering an ‘inclusive safe space’ for the town’s LGBTQIA+ community.

LGBTQIA+ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, pansexual, genderqueer, queer, intersexed, agender, asexual and ally community or people questioning their sexual identity – but the bar will be open to all.

Owner Sam Teale-Price, who also runs the nearby Olde Castle pub with husband Craig, said: “We want Doncaster’s LGBTQIA+ community to have somewhere they can call their own.

"There hasn’t been anywhere for people to go since Bar NY and Crystals in the Market Place closed. This will be an all-inclusive safe space for everyone to enjoy and have a good time.”

While work has started to transform the former Vintage Rockbar into The Library, an opening date is yet to be confirmed or announced because of the current coronavirus lockdown.

The split level bar will feature a downstairs dancefloor area ‘with a club vibe’ according to Sam, while the upstairs area will have a quieter theme to live up to its name, decked out with olde worlde books and vintage sofas and decor. There will even be a pink pool table.

The name of the venue is a knowing nod to RuPaul’s Drag Race – the popular reality TV show which has become a hit around the world, showcasing searches to find new and upcoming drag queens.

Drag acts will feature as part of the entertainment when the new bar opens, as well as other LGBTQIA+ acts.

The venue has also launched a lifetime membership scheme which allows members to queue jump, get priority ticket access and also helps donate funds to Doncaster Pride.

Added Sam: “There is a definite need for this type of venue in Doncaster. It’s going to be a place where people can express themselves and feel safe.

"It is a really exciting time for us and we can’t wait to open.”
