The former malthouse in Barnby Dun has been beautifully restored into over 48 homes, after being pulled back from the brink of losing the historic building forever. Viewings of its luxury apartments can be arranged now.

The impressive Edwardian grain store had stood derelict, until a sympathetic restoration by Wrights Investments breathed new life into the iconic building.

Instead of choosing to demolish the malthouse and redeveloping the site in the old railway sidings close to Doncaster, Colin Wright decided to reverse the damage caused by an earlier fire and take on the challenge of its painstaking restoration.

Working closely with Max Designs, he ensured that its original features were preserved to create a truly spectacular amalgamation of the past and present.

Hidden gems uncovered

The historic machinery workings – which were originally used in the process of converting cereal grain into malt – have been displayed as a special feature in the central atrium of the newly named The Maltings.

Original trusses also combine with modern glazed walkways to project a spacious and modern twist.

To show the sheer scale of The Maltings, four levels of the building can be viewed upwards from the ground floor.

The original roof structure has been enhanced by using modern glazing to bathe the communal areas with light – and seating areas with greenery will complete the peaceful ambiance.

Throughout the refurbishment, hidden gems were continually discovered. It was vital to Colin that anything of historical interest should be saved. Retaining the character of the building was of paramount importance.

Original quarry tiles on communal walkways

Many man hours were spent lifting, cleaning and re-laying original quarry tiles along the communal walkways. The cast iron columns which originally supported the structure were also cleaned and repainted.

The feature walls of the two, three and four-bedroom apartments have been left as the exposed brickwork, while sloping ceilings and original beams give The Maltings its unique character.

Meanwhile, modern kitchens and bathrooms sit expertly alongside the original features – giving a more modern and airy twist to the new homes.

Colin Wright said: “I am proud to say that this project has been an amazing journey for all involved. The original malthouse was such an important part of Doncaster, providing employment and work – in conjunction with local breweries – to provide a fine malt beer.

“It is a privilege to have been able to preserve this exceptional piece of history and now be able to offer high-quality apartments which will enable the building to be enjoyed for many more years to come.”

Wright Investments has used its experience of over 30 years as a property development and construction company – working with investors, land owners and local authorities – to create an exceptional finish at The Maltings.
