CULTURE: 12 of the biggest events in South Yorkshire in 2016

And 2016 looks set to be just as action-packed.

Highlights of the calendar range from the well-known, such as the ever-growing Tramlines music festival and the World Snooker Championships at The Crucible, to the first Outlines festival of music.

“It’s great to see that our major events programme is set to be ramped up again for 2016”, said Coun Sioned Mair-Richards, acting cabinet member for culture at Sheffield Council.

“2015 was a great year for events in Sheffield. Out of This World grew to be one of our busiest city centre events to date – second to only Tramlines – while the success of Allez Allez Sheffield brought professional cyclists and families together on two wheels.

“With the Year of Making and with Sheffield being selected as one of just six cities nationwide to host the Sport Relief Flagship Games – as well as the return of much-loved events across the city – 2016 is set to be a fantastic year.

“This is really good news for families who enjoy getting out and about in Sheffield, for culture vultures, for food lovers, for music fanatics, for sports fans and also for businesses and the leisure industry in Sheffield, who are set to reap the economic benefits.”

One of the first events next year will be on January 9, when the FIM World Indoor X Championships drives in to Sheffield Arena.

Tickets cost £35.75 for adults and £24.75 for children.

Music lovers can embrace the Outlines festival, on February 27.

This spin-off of the now massive Tramlines is fresh on the scene, with a headlining act of Roots Manuva.

The one-day, multi venue event will also feature Sheffield band Hey Sholay.

Organisers say it will be ‘a genre-spanning mix of established names and breaking talent’.

In March, the Sheffield Adventure Film Fesival will return for its tenth anniversary event.

It runs from March 11-13 and tickets, with different prices for different events, available at Sheffield Adventure Film Festival

Sheffield will also host the Sport Relief flagship games for the first time next year.

The event, which will include swimming, walking and cycling events, takes place on Sunday March 20.

Money raised will help disadvantaged people living incredibly tough lives, across the UK and the world’s poorest communities.

April is a busy month, with the Tour de Yorkshire cycle race heading for a lap of honour through Doncaster on the 29th.

Spectators, from Sheffield as well as the rest of South Yorkshire, are expected to line the course and the town is a finishing stage for the race.

In Sheffield, hundreds of runners will take to the streets for the Plusnet Yorkshire Half Marathon on April 10.

The route starts at the Heart of the City, stretching out into the Peak District.

The World Snooker Championships needs no introduction, and will return to The Crucible from April 16 to May 2.

Foodies can tuck in to a packed weekend of tastings, demonstrations and other activities as part of the Sheffield Food Festival in May.

The free celebration of the region’s independent food industry takes place on the final weekend of the month, from May 28 to the 30th, in the city centre. More details will be revealed nearer the time.

Fantasy fancy dress galore will be on offer at the Yorkshire Cosplay convention on June 11-12 in the Sheffield Arena.

It is hailed as the premier fantasy convention in Yorkshire for all things comics, anime, video games and cosplay.

Another month, another convention, as in July Horrorcon will return to Sheffield.

Blood-curdling guests, activities and more fancy dress are anticipated from July 9-10.

A venue and tickets have yet to be confirmed.

Now one of Sheffield’s biggest events, the music spectacular Tramlines is back for three days of partying from July 22-24.

Super early bird tickets have sold out but full festival tickets, at £42, are still available on the Tramlines website.

The line-up - which last year featured Basement Jaxx and The Wu-Tang Clan - has yet to be confirmed.

The ever popular Art in the Gardens will make a welcome return to the Botanical Gardens in September, and is one of many festivals held that month, along with Heritage Open Days, Sensoria and Festival of the Mind.
