Sugar was found straying at the back of a row of shops in the town and taken to the charity’s Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch.

A spokesman said: “Clearly in distress and a lot of pain, Sugar had been suffering with a large open wound and significant swelling on her front leg and her bones were exposed.

“The vet determined that her injuries were most likely due to the result of a nasty dog bite that had been ignored and become severely infected."

To give Sugar the best chance at survival it was thought she might have to lose her leg.

However, as operation day approached, the vet was astounded by the improvement the wound had made, resulting in a new plan – flush and clean the wound with the help of some extra medication.

Just a few weeks later, the wound was beginning to close. Since then, she has slowly been learning to use her leg again and

building confidence. Sugar was found just in time before the infection had a chance to take over her whole body.

She has now found her forever home where she can continue her recovery.

A spokesman added: “Animals like Sugar need the local RSPCA. There are many ways to help with rehoming and rehabilitating animals including volunteering, leaving a legacy, donating cash or goods or sponsoring through the Safe Haven programme.”
