South Yorkshire Police issue 24 more coronavirus fines, but thank majority for staying home

Police in South Yorkshire have issued another 24 fines to people caught breaching the coronavirus regulations over the Easter weekend.

But they have praised the vast majority of people across the region they say are continuing to stay at home to save lives.

South Yorkshire Police said officers handed out two dozen fixed penalty notices between Good Friday and Easter Sunday, most of which were for non-essential travel.

On Saturday, it said, two men were fined after being stopped while driving from Sheffield to Nottingham to pick up a friend.

Two other men were penalised after being caught speeding on their way from Doncaster to Durham to see friends.

The latest fines come after the force revealed on Thursday that officers had doled out 26 fines in the space of 24 hours to people caught flouting the rules.

Superintendent Paul McCurry said: “I want to say a big thank you to all of you for staying at home this weekend. We’re all starting to know people who are suffering from COVID-19. By staying at home you’re helping to save the lives of your family and friends.

“During the bank holiday weekend we’ve been on patrol in a number of locations in South Yorkshire. These are locations you’ve told us about where people are not adhering to social distancing.

“This is a great opportunity for our officers to engage with you, the public, and explain the guidelines around social distancing. Sadly, on a couple of occasions we’ve had to move to enforcement, but of course that’s always the last thing we want to do.”
