Six new Doncaster patients die from coronavirus as UK announces 936 more deaths

The town has seen the highest number of deaths from COVID-19 in South Yorkshire overnight, with six deaths confirmed in the latest 24 hour reporting period.

Newly released figures show that there have been more deaths in Doncaster than Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley across the last 24 hours of recorded figures.

As of 9am this morning, there have been 144 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Doncaster.

Sheffield saw the number of deaths rise to 65 – an increase of five. The city has 883 confirmed cases.

The toll in Rotherham now stands at 14 deaths – with no fresh deaths from overnight.

In Barnsley, there have been 27 deaths – a rise of four.

Nationally, there have been 55,242 cases and 6,159 deaths in England – although today’s daily figures have yet to be released.

Last week, Doncaster Royal Infirmary said that seven people in Doncaster had been successfully treated for COVID-19 and had been released from hospital.

The number of cases in the town is believed to be far higher, with only people admitted to hospital being tested for the virus.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is "responding to treatment" for coronavirus as he spends his third day in hospital.

The prime minister was being kept in St Thomas' Hospital in London "for close monitoring" and remained clinically stable, Downing Street said.

Downing Street said he was not working but could contact those he needed to.
