Bosses at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said the 200th patient treated for coronavirus had been allowed home after treatment.

A spokesman said: “What a wonderful way to celebrate VE Day by discharging another patient who has succesfully beaten Covid-19 and our 200th to do so.

“Our colleagues are currently waging a very different kind of war against this virus, however, together with our colleagues across the NHS and the world, we are starting to turn the tide.”

There have been 522 cases of COVID-19 in Doncaster with 116 deaths.

According to the Office for National Statistics, there have been a further 11 deaths in the town’s care homes, bringing the total across all settings to 127.

The figures relate to deaths recorded and reported in the last 24 hours in the Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust which includes Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Montagu Hospital in Mexborough and Bassetlaw Hospital in Worksop.

Nationally, the UK coronavirus death toll reached 31,587 yesterday, the highest total in Europe and second only to America in terms of deaths.

Later today, Prime Minister Boris Johnson will deliver a speech outling how he intends to take the UK out of lockdown restrictions with what he has called his ‘road map.’

It is thought there will be an easing of some restrictions from as early as tomorrow.
