In its weekly update on the coronavirus situation in Doncaster, health chiefs at Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust, described the developments as ‘positive news’ – but have pressed home the message for people not to become complacement.

In a statement, a spokesman said: “We have some more positive news this week as the number of COVID-19 patients we are providing care for has remained broadly stable rather than continuing to rise.

“We are hopeful that we are starting to see the impact of falling community infection rates but we cannot be complacent and would urge everyone to continue to be vigilant and follow the new restrictions announced today when they come into force next week."

In separately released figures, prepared by NHS England, the number of coronavirus deaths in Doncaster now stands at 424 – an increase of 12 on yesterday’s tally.

However, delays in recording fatalities do not necessarily mean the deaths occurred in the last 24 hours.

The statement added: "Also remember that the simple actions of washing your hands frequently, keeping a 2m distance from others, limiting the number of contacts you have and wearing a face covering does make a difference and has had an impact over these last few weeks.

“You've done an amazing job so far in Doncaster and Bassetlaw, and while it's been challenging, we're truly appreciative of your efforts. Please keep it up for a little while longer. Thank you.”

The news comes after the Government announced this morning that Doncaster would be placed into Tier 3, the highest tier of coronavirus restrictions, when the nationwide lockdown ends on December 2.

It means that household mixing will still be banned while pubs, restaurants and indoor entertainment venues will stay closed.
