"The closure will enable us to complete a full and thorough deep clean of the building and we will welcome students back to school on Monday 2 November.

“Whilst we understand the impact of this decision, and have not taken it lightly, we feel it is in the best interests of the community.

"Teaching will continue remotely through a mixture of live lessons and work set via Microsoft teams.

Yesterday, the school said pupils in Year 8, 10, 11, 12 and 13 were studying from home following positive cases in several different year groups at the Thorne school.

The academy, which opened in September 2005 and replaced Thorne Grammar School, is part of Emmanuel Schools Foundation and teaches about 1200 pupils aged 11 to 18.

She added: "Our priority has been to continue to maintain as much normality for youngsters at the Academy in terms of their education, whilst ensuring that the health and welfare of our students and staff is paramount.”
