Doncaster only place in South Yorkshire to record coronavirus deaths for last two days

Doncaster is the only place in South Yorkshire to record new coronavirus deaths for the last two days.

The town’s death toll now stands at 224 – up one on yesterday. On Tuesday, two deaths were recorded.

There have been no recorded deaths in Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham for the last two days.

The latest figures come amid concerns of a surge in cases in Doncaster, leading to speculation that a localised lockdown like the one currently in force in Leicester might be brought in.

But yesterday, Dr Rupert Suckling, Doncaster’s Director of Public Health allayed concerns over the number of cases but urged people to be vigilant and to follow social distancing and hygiene rules.

The message has been repeated by Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust who said: “The last thing any of us want is a local lockdown. Cases in the area are currently low, as are our numbers of Covid-19 positive inpatients within our hospitals. We want to keep it that way.”

Across the UK, a further 50 people, who tested positive for the COVID-19 have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 28,759.

Yesterday, The Telegraph reported that coronavirus cases have risen in 10 towns and counties in the past two weeks, with health officials watching these areas, ready to contain any new spikes threatening the UK's fight against the killer bug.

It reported that Doncaster, second in the table to Leicester, saw 43 new infections - half the cases Leicester reported - within the same two week period.
