Coronavirus infection rate increases in Sheffield and Doncaster, with both in top 10 for spread of COVID-19

But the spread of COVID-19 elsewhere South Yorkshire has reduced slightly, new figures from Public Health England show.

In the week ending June 28, there were 24.4 confirmed cases per 100,000 population in Sheffield – up from 20.6 the previous week.

In Doncaster, the infection rate rose from 17.4 to 21.3, but in Barnsley it fell from 54.7 to 35.1 and in Rotherham it reduced from 33.6 to 26.1.

Barnsley now has the third highest rate of new infections in England, with Rotherham seventh, Sheffield eighth and Doncaster 10th in the table.

Leicester, where a localised lockdown has been introduced, has by far the highest weekly rate of infection in England, which increased slightly from 140.2 to 141.3.

The figures are based on tests in hospitals and other healthcare settings, known as pillar one testing, and tests in the wider community, known as pillar two.

The daily updates from the Department for Health only include pillar one results, providing a less complete picture of rates of infection across the country.

Nationally, the latest statistics from Public Health England show the number of cases detected fell from nearly 5,800 to just over 4,100, with more than three quarters of new cases now being detected through testing outside of hospitals.

The number of new cases is highest in the East Midlands, Yorkshire and Humber and the North West.
