Local Lions clubs have been delivering the toys to the hospital for more than ten years. In 2009 three local clubs were involved, today Glanford and Lindsey, Scunthorpe, Brigg, Winterton, Isle of Axholme and Barton clubs all donate.

Members from the clubs pop along once a month with the toy lions and hand them over to staff to help bring a smile to poorly children’s’ faces.

President of Scunthorpe Lions Jim Harding said: “It is a pleasure to support children at difficult times. We look forward to seeing their faces light up when we bring the toys in. The Lions are a caring organisation that looks after all ages in the community.”

Lions public relations officer Malcolm Jackson said: “It’s great to have parents approach us while we are out and about saying how much their child enjoyed receiving a lion while in hospital.”

He added that all of the money raised by the local Lions goes back into the local community.

The six clubs each take it in turn to deliver the soft toys and throughout the year they hand over a massive 600 toy lions to Scunthorpe hospital.

Disney ward sister Sharon Vickers said: “We really appreciate the kind donation from the Lions clubs every month. The children’s faces light up when they receive the soft toys and makes their experience at the ward a more pleasant one.”

Mr Jackson added: “June 2017 marks the Lions 100th year of helping communities. We are delighted that our toy lions venture has proved such a success.”
