Doncaster school 's 'Big Pedal' saw 116 bikes racked up on one day

Last month, staff, pupils, parents and carers at Sheep Dip Lane Academy in Dunscroft took part in the annual Big Pedal event, supported by Sustrans.

Every day, pupils and their supporters were encouraged to travel to school actively, this involved walking, scooting, biking and even roller skating to school.

Terry Storey, Bike It Champion, organised a range of activities to take place during the event, these included ‘Bling your bike day’, ‘The Golden lock’, ‘Bright day’ and active travel

dress down day. He was supported by his bike it crew who helped to collate the data each day and supported with the giving out of prizes.

Deputy headteacher Alison Parkhurst said: “The bike and scooter racks were overflowing some days, resulting in additional parking areas being needed, 116 bikes and scooters were recorded on site on one of the days.

"We are so proud of the support from everybody who took part and are delighted with our overall result of 1st place for the Yorkshire and Humber region and 5th place nationally. “Pupils have commented on how great it was to be part of the event and can’t wait for the next bike it session."

*Sustrans Big Pedal is the UK’s largest inter-school cycling, walking, wheeling and scooting challenge and has been running for 11 years.

It's inspired hundreds of thousands of pupils, staff and parents to take active journeys to school.
