Engineering courses for all

Central to NCATI’s philosophy is that engineering is open to everyone. In the spirit of broadening access to the discipline and its many exciting opportunities, the college’s Higher Education programmes have more flexible entry requirements than traditional university courses, with the BSc in High Speed Rail & Infrastructure requiring two A-Levels at grade C or the equivalent.

This is in recognition of the many different people that are needed by the transport and infrastructure sector for it to thrive, something that NCATI’s principal, Ian Fitzpatrick, believes is key to the college’s offer.

Ian says: “NCATI was established to create the engineering workforce of the future, drawn from lots of different backgrounds and with the adaptable skillset to take on today’s and tomorrow’s challenges.

“What makes the college different is its focus on creating routes into engineering that are accessible for all, whether it’s our BTEC in engineering for 16-year-olds, our apprenticeships with employers like HS2, or our engineering degree pathways.”

The college, based on Carolina Way in Doncaster, relaunched in 2021 as part of the University of Birmingham Group to provide its specialist training courses.

Guaranteed routes into employment

Thousands of new people are needed by the transport and infrastructure sector over the next decade in order to deliver upcoming rail modernisation and transformation projects. And it’s not just engineers that are needed: the types of jobs within the industry are very varied, from hands-on roles to office-based, from creative to technical.

Current roles needed in the industry include:

- Data analysts

- Project managers

- Architects

- Designers

- Technicians

- Civil and systems engineers

NCATI is unique in that it is the only college set up to deliver its learners directly into these roles, and address the industry’s skills shortage. Developed in partnership with businesses that already work in transport and infrastructure, the college’s courses and facilities have been designed specifically to give these businesses graduates with the skills they need.

This includes the many apprenticeships delivered by NCATI, working with employers including HS2, Siemens and Network Rail, to give their students the opportunity to learn from the best in the industry, and earn while they learn.

Upcoming open day

The college will be hosting an open day on Friday 11th November, from 1-5pm, where you can:

- Tour its impressive campus (with £9 million worth of high-tech engineering equipment)

- Meet employers in the transport and infrastructure sector

- Speak to lecturers about what a career in transport and infrastructure could mean for you
