STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects are often the ones that children struggle with in school which is why Marta Mathews, a 26-year-old tutor from Bessacar set up her own tutoring business.

Marta said: “I started the business two years ago after working as a tutor on middlemen websites.

“I realised that there was a gap in the market in Doncaster, no one could offer a service for all the science and math subjects in one place.

“So I set up Smarta Tutoring, we tutor all the way from SATS to A-levels.”

When the government announced that there would be no exams this year due to the coronavirus many of Marta’s pupils were no longer in need of a tutor.

But despite this turn of events, her business is still thriving as now they have turned their attention towards online tutoring via Zoom.

“We have found that there is a huge demand for science and math tutors in Doncaster,” Marta continued.

Marta herself has a degree in Physics and says that at least half of their students are female and she is glad to see so many girls pursuing education in STEM.
