Doncaster’s biggest ever career fair aims to inspire children

Over 100 businesses have attended a career fair aimed attracting young people to work and live in Doncaster.

Almost 4,000 young people attended the career fair, ranging from 10-18 years old from 30 schools and colleges across the borough.

“We’re showcasing to the kids what is available to the borough and showing the businesses what great young people we have.

“We want to inspire the next generation and showcase that Doncaster has fantastic opportunities.”

Exhibitors ranged from SMEs from the Doncaster community to national businesses such as Polypipe.

Dean Asher, Head of Technical and Customer Experience at Polypipe Doncaster, said: “Opportunities Doncaster is the key to the youth of Doncaster.

“As one of the largest employers in Doncaster we feel that it’s important that we’re here showing some of the potential careers and opportunities that we have to offer.”

The interactive stalls included a mock live operating theatre from the NHS and VR headsets at Lightforge.

Sue Beddows, Careers Advisor at Trinity Academy, said: “Today is really important because it gives the students an insight on what is actually available out there for once they leave school.

“Some of our students came to this event last year and it changed their minds about what their options were and gave others a focus and direction.”

The career fair has been part of a week-long event put on by the chamber.

Daniel Chapman, aged 14, from Hayfield School, said: “I’ve really enjoyed it - there are lots of different things to do and there is something here for everyone.”

Sophie Foster, Marketing Manager at MechFS, said: “One of the key things about our business is that we’re interested in working with the local community and local kids.

“We have a lot of apprentices within the business which have then gone on to pretty major roles within the company.

“It’s very important for us to have those links with the community and really help students in the area to excel.”
