Cineworld Sheffield got to host the northern premiere and a mix of our competition winners and VIP guests were among the first to see the action-packed new superhero movie.

Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios, the 12A film stars Chris Pratt as human adventurer Peter Quill, AKA Star Lord, who goes into action playing his Sony Walkman mix tape of 80s classics, teamed up with a band of on-the-run alien misfits who are out to save the galaxy after stealing a coveted orb.

His crew comprises vengeance-crazed warrior Drax the Destroyer, played by WWE superstar Dave Bautista, gun-toting Rocket the raccoon, with Bradley Cooper providing the voice, green-skinned deadly assassin Gamora, played by Zoe Saldana, and tree-like humanoid Groot, brought to life with Vin Diesel and some remarkable CGI.

They are up against villainous psycho Ronan, played by Lee Pace, and a shaven-headed Karen Gillan as Ronan’s sidekick Nebula. The film introduces Josh Brolin as the voice of sinister Marvel super villain Thanos.

Tara Preece, aged 40, of Worksop, said: “Brilliant. Really good. Comical, adventurous, yes really good.”

Superhero expert Holly Eyre, aged 22, of Sheffield based comic dealers World Of Superheroes, said: “I loved it. I thought it was amazing. I think the best part about it, there’s a load of new characters. With The Avengers, you’ve kind of got fed up of the characters a bit. So it’s nice to see a load of new characters brought into the Marvel universe.”

Jack Hinchliffe, 67, of Brampton, said: “It was quite awesome. Very good. Story line was OK. What you expect. And some of the things that happened were absolutely marvellous”.

Jason Smedley, 25, of Rotherham, said: “It was fantastic. Really funny, lots of action and a really good story as well. It’s heart warming. Fantastic, yes. I couldn’t speak highly enough of it.”

Christine Brocklebank, 63, of Rotherham, said: “It was hysterical. I wasn’t sure as I’m not a geek like my friend. But it was a brilliant film. I’d say go and see it. Don’t miss it.There was a love story in it. It was wonderful. You’ve got to go see it.”

Josh Daly, 15, of Sheffield, said: “It was pretty bad ass, I have to admit. A lot of throw backs to 80s movies. Well written. It was literally just like a movie you would see from the 80s and 90s, with all these modern effects. Why can’t more movies be like that?”

Sam Flavell, 14, of Sheffield, said: “It was a really good film, with lots of action and comedy. I will be recommending this to all my family and friends.

Cineworld Sheffield Operations manager Andy Meakin, 40, who booked a night off to watch the film, said: “It’s a brilliant film, with a thrown back to’80s style sci-fi - you’re talking a Star Wars kind of feel. There’s action, adventure, a hint of romance, but so much comedy throughout.

“Heart of the team, has got to be Rocket, a character that I have loved since the early 80s when I first bought the comic books which he was in. Absolutely brillaint film. It’s paid off, the expectation and wait has really paid dividends.”

Colleague Paul Plant, who was working, said: “There was a lot of laughing and people coming out saying how much they enjoyed it. There’s been an absolutely brilliant buzz regarding this film.

“It’s the start of summer at Cineworld. We’ve major films coming out, like Expendables 3, Lucy, Planes 2, even the new Inbetweeners film.”
