Despite the early morning rain, this small group of dedicated ramblers were heading back in time

Six ramblers met at Cromford Mill near Matlock for this 10 mile walk. After walking uphill through woodland, we were offered splendid views towards Cromford Moor. The rain started as we passed the National Stone Centre and joined the High Peak Trail, becoming biblical by the time we reached Middleton Top. A picnic table awning provided welcome shelter until the rain bated.

The Engine House for the world’s oldest beam engine can be found at Middleton Top. Its purpose was to get wagons up and down the steep hills on one of the world’s first long distance railways.

We lunched in Wirksworth, after which we were blessed with dry weather. The walk continued climbing up to Bolehill before descending to High Peak Junction and following the Cromford Canal back to our vehicles.
