Dick Whittington, Dearne Playhouse
The Playhouse is highlighting the skills of dancers from Wendy Charles School of Dance in Barnsley in its professional pantomime this week, which stars a former pupil of the school.
Dancers from the school in Mapplewell have been selected to perform alongside a cast of professionals who have performed up and down the country.
Whilst the majority of the cast have graduated from theatre schools elsewhere, Dearne Playhouse have secured and encouraged a cast of Yorkshire-born actors and actresses to return to the region to perform and encourage cries of ‘he’s behind you’ this week until Saturday.
The famous story follows Dick as he ventures to the bright lights of London to seek his fortune.
He secures a job and falls in love but it’s not long before the evil King Rat is making trouble.
Maintaining pantomime tradition, the lead role of Dick Whittington is played by a woman, Kerry Jo Horbury, a former student of Wendy Charles and a graduate of Phil Winston’s Theatre Works in Blackpool.
Speaking of her casting, Kerry said: “I’ve always wanted to be in a pantomime and jumped at the opportunity last year when I was asked to play the role of Aladdin.
“I absolutely loved every minute of it so when the chance came round again it was kind of a no-brainer!
“The company and cast are great to work with and I’m looking forward to working with everyone again this year.”
