Christmas has come early for a talented Doncaster actress who is flying high after landing the lead role of Peter Pan.

Sophie Wright, aged 19, from Doncaster, who originally tried out for the part of Wendy, impressed pantomime producer David Lee when she was asked to read for the role of the ‘little boy who never grew up’.

The production, which is winging its way to Doncaster Racecourse, will take place over the festive season.

Having trained at Sylvia Young Theatre School and Cathedral Academy of Performing Arts, Sophie now studies acting at York College.

She has a number of television credits under her belt including E4’s My Mad Fat Diary and CBBC’s Harriet’s Army.

Sophie will make her first pantomime appearance in Peter Pan, which is set to run at the Pavilion Theatre at Doncaster Racecourse between December 12 and January 4.

She said: “I’m thrilled to make my pantomime debut in my home town – I just can’t wait to fly.”

David Lee, who has also produced numerous successful pantomimes at Doncaster’s Civic Theatre, said: “I’m delighted to have cast a Doncaster artist in the title role. It’s always good to cast the net through auditions to find local talent.

“In Sophie we have a very talented young lady who I’m sure will portray Peter Pan with verve and enthusiasm, to bring the enchanting character to life.”

And, following final auditions which took place in the public arena of Doncaster’s Frenchgate Shopping Centre this weekend, the title role of Wendy Darling has also been cast.

Sarah Brown, an accomplished leading lady of pantomime based near London, wowed the panel of judges comprising of producer David, choreographer Vicky Lowe, Doncaster Racecourse’s events manager Nikki Griffiths, and special guest Robin Colvill from the Grumbleweeds.
