A star with a heart as big as his voice returned to his roots to share stories about his life and career with fans.
Brian Blessed was host at a sell-out special evening in the Dearne Playhouse, with Amy Parker, co-director of Cast Academy.
Local fans were joined by others from as far away as Scotland, to spend an evening with the entertaining character who grew up in Thurnscoe.
Ms Parker said: “I had an absolutely brilliant night with Brian. He is one of the kindest, down to earth, most amazingly talented men I have ever met. A true gentleman through and through.
“I loved hosting his show, and I look forward to seeing him again soon!”
Brian talked about his humble upbringing in South Yorkshire, how he rose to stardom, and where it all began. He encouraged what Cast Academy are doing with young students from South Yorkshire, and applauded their use of Shakespeare in acting classes.
Theatre manager, Julie Medlam, said: “Well what a night! I feel honoured and privileged to have had Mr Brian Blessed appear at our theatre. He is the most wonderful, genuine, inspiring person I have ever met.
“ I would like to thank him from the bottom of my heart for supporting us like he does. Thank you to everyone who came to watch and thank you to all our lovely volunteers for helping to make this night truly special for everyone.”
One starstruck audience member from York said after the evening: “I can finally tell people I’ve shared a stage and shaken hands with the legend that is Brian Blessed. The night was a dream come true for me, not only was the show amazing fun, Brian was amazingly generous with his time, staying to sign and pose for photos, I hope when I reach 80 I have as much energy in me! Thank you for a brilliant evening and a brilliant opportunity.”
Mr Blessed is the Patron of The Dearne Playhouse. He performed on stage at a very early age, and maintained a lasting attraction to the theatre.
