Children’s Reading Week
Meadowhall shopping centre is hosting a series of reading workshops this week to coincide with this event, run by Waterstones bookshop.
The workshops, which will take place in the Centre’s Oasis Dining Quarter daily until Friday, have been created to give children of all ages the opportunity to enjoy and indulge in a variety of books ahead of the new school year.
The activities will include readings from some all-time favourite children’s novels, book review writing, with the opportunity for the reviews to appear in the store book signings and competitions.
The Reading Agency states that 66% of us read in our spare time, making reading the most popular hobby in the UK.
However, according to the agency, only one in five parents easily find the opportunity to read to their children and only 40% of Englands’s 10-year-olds have a positive attitude to reading, compared to 64% in Italy and 58% in Germany.
Alex Caley, Meadowhall event manager, said: “We have worked with book store Waterstones to host a children’s pop-up library and reading workshop this summer holiday, which will form part of our summer pop-up campaign.
“Reading is a fundamental part of any child’s development and we hope that our pop-up will help to encourage children – and adults – to both explore and enjoy reading now and in the future.”
