Video: Community unites for weekend of Halloween and bonfire fun

Doncaster folk are set for a weekend of fun, fireworks and friends as Halloween and Bonfire Night festivities take place.

An array of activities are taking place across the borough from Halloween discos and spooky walks to community fireworks displays and bonfires.

This year, more events than ever are being run by members of the community in conjunction with police and council support.

Mayor of Doncaster Ros Jones said: “It is great to see such a wide variety of activities in place over the Halloween and bonfire period. To see that a number of these events will be run by the community, often in partnership with different organisations, is fantastic. It is times like this that really show Doncaster at its best.”

Council area teams members will be encouraging and supporting volunteers and community groups over the weekend, with an estimated 80 different community groups organising activities, ranging from Halloween parties and pumpkin lantern making through to community bonfires. At the same time, joint police and council visits will be carried out to firework retailers to ensure fireworks are not being sold to under 18s.

Mayor Jones added: “The local council area teams are working with partners to support and provide activities at a local level. Area teams will be out in the communities throughout the on-going Operation Anticipate period, as well as hi-visibility patrols, alongside partners such as South Yorkshire Police. We hope that this combination of high quality diversionary activities and high visibility patrolling will give reassurance over the weekend, helping our communities to stay safe whilst having fun.”
