Plan to turn empty shops in Doncaster into art space

Empty shops across Doncaster town centre could be turned into art spaces - for one weekend only.

DNweekeND will animate the town centre and five surrounding areas of Balby, Bentley, Thorne Moorends, Mexborough and Rossington over the course of one weekend, from May 9 to 11.

Artists and groups will showcase their work where the public can interact with a range of performance and art forms.

Right Up Our Street – which is led by a consortium of Doncaster arts organisations and supported by National Lottery funding - is inviting local groups and artists to take over empty shop units in two town centre areas, Frenchgate and Waterdale, and looking for ideas in the other five surrounding areas. The organisation is also planning to use some outdoor spaces for performances, and providing stages for local bands and dance groups.

Grants from £100 to £1,500 are also available to develop potential projects.

Information and application forms are available from creative producer Andrew Loretto on 01302 558 067 or email

Anyone with a ‘great idea’ for the DNweekeND which would benefit from financial support is invited to apply for one of the grants.
