Yorkshire golf: Doncaster's Josh Berry holds his nerve to claim third place in USKGF European Championship

The 11-year-old's outstanding performance has earned him a place in today’s Van Horn Cup when he will be up against category winner Shubham Jaglan, of India, and Allan Kournikova, brother of former tennis star Anna, who plays out of Palm Beach, Florida.

Berry carded rounds of 74 74 73 for his 221 aggregate, having set a personal best on day one, equalling it on day two and then bettering it on day three.

He stumbled to a double bogey at his third hole, three-putting after finding a greenside bunker with his tee shot at the par-3 hole, but recovered to birdie the fifth.

Another shot was shed at the seventh, but three consecutive pars followed, the last of them thanks to a gutsy 25ft putt.

He birdied both 11 and 12 to get back to even for his round.

A second double bogey of the round came at the 14th after a lost ball off the tee, but again he responded brilliantly by getting up and down for a par before birdieing 16 and then parring his way in.

Father Scott said: "He played his worst golf of the three days today but his mind was so good - he learned so much from the first two rounds to keep his head."

Berry was competing at the European Championships after winning the adidas golf Wee Wonders event on the Strathtyrum course last August.

Next month he will head to US Open venue Pinehurst, in North Carolina, for the 2016 world championship.

His handicap has fallen from 12 to six since his victory at St Andrews, and is set to go lower still following his performance at Craigielaw.
