Doncaster Demons will host the first of two events aimed at getting more women to play rugby this weekend.

Participation in women’s rugby has doubled in the past 10 years and England Women are the reigning 15-a-side world champions.

England Rugby has launched a new women and girls’ programme, Pitch up and Play, in an attempt to get 10,000 more women into the sport by 2017.

The first of those sessions, open to ladies aged 18 and over, will be hosted by the Demons at Castle Park on Saturday (noon-1.30pm).

Demons team manager Gemma French said: “We hope these friendly Pitch up and Play sessions will encourage women to be involved in rugby, whether that is tag, touch, 7’s or full 15’s. We welcome all ages and ability, no previous experience necessary.”

Demons, who currently sit second in the Women’s NC North 1 Division, will host another Pitch up and Play session on Saturday, February 20.

The sessions are free and participants are encouraged to bring along a friend, family member or colleague. Organisers say they will appeal to women who might go to the gym, take part in obstacle course races or who perhaps want to become more active. There is no need to book and no special equipment is required.
