Doncaster Knights director of rugby Clive Griffiths described his side’s comprehensive win over Cinderford as the best yet as they continue to set the early pace.
The Knights travelled to the Recreation Ground with an unbeaten record while their SSE National League One opponents Cinderford had managed just one win.
And the contrasting early form showed as converted tries for Paul Jarvis, David Clark, Tyson Lewis and two for captain Matt Challinor handed them a 35-5 away win.
The hosts only managed to get on the score sheet seven minutes from time with Lee Fortey touching down but regardless Griffiths admitted the performance from his players was of the highest order.
“I thought it was our best all-round performance of the season,” said Griffiths . “It was only penalties that really forced us on the back-foot and Cinderford’s kick-and-drive game, outside that I felt very comfortable with our defence.
“We scored five tries again and though there were a couple of players who went missing, it was a difficult place to go and we keep growing every week, because two thirds of this squad are new boys.
“Our loan boys Jack Cosgrove from Worcester and Shaun Jones from Leeds are continuing to gel really well. But it was a captain’s knock really and Matt Challinor was fantastic.
“It will send a message to the rest of the league to say we are serious about what we are doing.”
Knights raced into a 14-0 lead inside 20 minutes with Lewis and Challinor touching down, while Dougie Flockhart adding the extras - something he would do all afternoon.
Challinor and Jarvis added scores either side of the break with Clark rounding off the team’s scoring on 53 minutes before a series of replacements came on.
The bonus-point win leaves Doncaster top of the table by a point ahead of next weekend’s clash with high-scoring Fylde, a fact Griffiths will look to address in training this week.
“Fylde are a points machine, they are scoring 30 and conceding 30,” he added. We like what they bring to the party so it’s going to be testing.
