A last minute try from No 8 Adam Kettle was not enough for Doncaster Phoenix as they crashed out of the Yorkshire Shield at the second round stage, losing 16-5 to hosts York.

The currently Yorkshire Division One leaders, the Phoenix had high hopes of progressing to the third round of the competition with a win over a York side who are fourth in the table.

But their hosts proved too strong, and opened up a 13-0 lead at half time before holding out for strong victory to continue in their cup fortunes.

The Phoenix return to league action this Saturday when they get an early chance of revenge - they’re due to head back to York for a rematch.

Thornensians were beaten in round two of the Yorkshire Silver Trophy, losing 29-10 on the road at Wetherby.

Conditions were awful with a deluge pouring down before the game, making for difficult handling throughout.

Unfortunately for Thorne, Wetherby had a particularly strong scrum and so the handling problems played more into their hands than the visitors.

However, Thornensians stuck to their task and managed to score two tries in response to the slippery conditions.

The first came through number two Rob Russell and the second was scored by Ryan Pilley.

The number eight crashed over for the away side after good play through the forward line.

In other local action, Wheatley Hills entertain Alnwick in a North One East match at York Road this weekend.

Meanwhile, Wath on Dearne are at home against Malton and Norton in Yorkshire One.

Thornensians entertain Baildon in Yorkshire Three at Coulman Road.

Rossington Hornets go to Rotherham Clifton in Yorkshire Five.

A win could see them move up to fifth.
