Local rivals trounce Thorne

THORNENSIANS became the latest victims of unbeaten Wath on Dearne when they crashed to a 38-0 defeat in their Yorkshire Three match at Moor Road.

Thorne never got a look-in as Wath - the highest scoring side in the division - picked up yet another bonus point with a six-try display.

They took the lead early in the game when full back Adam West raced over for a try which fly half Joe Thompson converted.

Further tries by centre Steve Mason and No 8 Matthew Burrows, the latter converted by Thompson, saw Wath turn round 19 points clear, and they repeated the exercise in the second half.

Goal kicker Thompson touched down for the first try after the break, converting it himself, and winger Jason Wong – brought up from the second team – ran in the next try.

Then, with two minutes to go, Adam West raced over for his second try to seal the win, Thompson adding the points.

n Wheatley Hills’ scheduled North One East clash at Durham City was postponed because of a frozen pitch.

This weekend they are due to entertain Hartlepool Rovers at York Road.

n Doncaster Phoenix had to make do with a losing bonus point after hosts Huddersfield YMCA snatched a late 21-20 victory in their Yorkshire Two clash.

League leaders Huddersfield fell behind with Doncaster Phoenix flanker Joe Watts scoring an early try which fly half Dan Storey converted.

YMCA hit back with a penalty, but Jono Storey touched down to put the Phoenix 12-3 ahead.

The home side pulled back a converted try but the visitors still led 12-10 at the break.

Centre Craig Deakin kicked a drop goal to keep the gap at two points with YMCA having pulled back a penalty, and Watts bagged a second try to make it 20-13 to the South Yorkshire side.

But a late penalty and try saw the West Yorkshire side snatch victory in the closing minutes.

n In Yorkshire Five there was no luck for Adwick le Street who lost 14-5 at home against Nestle Rowntree.

Rossington Hornets were beaten 51-10 at Wensleydale.
