Doncaster Phoenix RUFC seal away day win at Burton

Doncaster Phoenix put in a fine away performance to come away from Burton with a 29-22 win despite playing the second half with just 14 men.

That was after scrum-half Matty Drennan was sent off for foul play on the stroke of half-time.

Phoenix started brightly and were quickly on the board when winger James Wright went over for a try converted by fly-half Will Burden after just seven minutes.

The visitors were having the bulk of the play and it was no surprise when Burden added another penalty on the half-hour mark to give Phoenix a deserved 10-0 lead.

The hosts then scored a push-over try which was duly converted before levelling scores at 10-10 following the sending-off of Drennan, which resulted in a simple penalty kick for the home side.

If anyone thought the dismissal would daunt Phoenix, they were wrong and despite conceding an unconverted try five minutes into the half it was in fact the visitors who went on to dominate the remainder of the game.

In quick response to the home try, Phoenix went back on the attack and it wasn’t long before winger Wright scored his second try. This spurred on the visitors and soon flanker Will Taylor broke to run in under the sticks.

Wright then completed his hat-trick after another break and pass from Taylor saw him sprint from the home 22 to score a bonus point try.

Both tries were converted by full-back Adams although the hosts did manage a late converted try.

Next up for Phoenix is the visit of struggling side South Leicester at Castle Park on Saturday.
