He particularly caught the eye in the club's 72-10 win over Cardiff Blues Premiership Select in their B&I Cup clash at Castle Park when scoring a well-taken brace which included a try from inside his own half.

“The coaches were challenging me and they gave me a start against Ealing and Bristol and I did well enough, even though we lost both games, to keep my place for the B&I game against Cardiff and it just all clicked on the day,” he recalled.

The 27-year-old, who played for Scotland at U18 and U19 level, is no stranger to scoring memorable tries.

During his spell with Heriots, whom he helped secure the 2014-15 BT Premiership when scoring the match-winning try, he also won the league’s try of the season award.

Hill, who also won the BT Premiership player of the season award the same season, signed his first professional contract that summer when joining Guiness Pro-12 champions Glasgow Warriors.

He moved into the Championship last season plying his trade with Bedford Blues before deciding to take up a one-year deal, which he hopes will be extended, with Knights.

“It’s been a good move for me and I’m really enjoying it,” he said. “Kendo is a really good forwards and has so much knowledge and I think it’s made me a better player.”

Reflecting on the season so far Hill says: “We all know that we can do better.

“We had hoped to go into 2018 on the back of four successive league and cup wins and it was disappointing to concede a late match-winning try against Yorkshire Carnegie at Castle Park in our last game of 2017.

“We’ll certainly be looking to bounce back in our first league game of 2018 at Nottingham but we’ve got two B&I Cup pool games before then starting with Saturday’s home game against Bristol, who we beat down at Ashton Gate.

“Bristol look to be concentrating more on the league and they’ve fielded different sides in their B&I games so far including a very young team last time out against Leinster A.

“Whatever side they do play we’ll be strong and hopefully we can pick up a win which will probably be good enough to get us into the KO stages with a game to spare.”
