Clive Griffiths is looking forward to being at the helm as Doncaster Knights head back to the Championship - but this time they’re here to stay, writes James Marshall.
Griffiths came back to Castle Park as Director of Rugby in 2012 and lead Doncaster back into the Championship at the first time of asking last season.
And now, the Welshman is determined not to drop down into National One again.
“To get back to the Championship at the first attempt had never been done before, but I’m not bothered with records,” Griffiths said.
“Our brand of rugby got us there when we needed it. Now it’s about dipping our toe in the water. We know what it’s all about and what it’s going to take.
“Consolidation is the word, we can’t get too ahead of ourselves even with our good players.”
Although Griffiths’ aim is to just stay in the division, he doesn’t lack confidence in his group of players.
“I don’t want to be too negative in saying ‘consolidate.’ We’re just re-grouping and looking forward to it,” he said.
“If we believe in what we’re doing and have strong belief and comradery you’re half way there.
“We’re really putting it in and we’re looking forward to reaping the rewards and looking forward to playing Championship rugby again.”
He went on: “If you look at our forwards the vast majority have played Championship rugby before, they might feel they have a point to prove and put right after what happened the last time we played at this level.”
Doncaster Knights kick off their Championship campaign against Plymouth at home on Saturday, September 6, before facing Jersey away the following weekend.
