Doncaster Knights have signed Irish pair Michael Heaney and Declan Cusack.

Scrum half Heaney, 24, returns to Castle Park after a stint at Guinness Pro 12 side Ulster.

Number ten Cusack, 27, joins from relegated Championship outfit Plymouth Albion.

Director of ruby Clive Griffiths said of Heaney: “Michael has gained some invaluable experience in the last two seasons at Ulster and learnt from some great players including their first choice number nine Ruan Pienaar.

“Competing against a World Cup winner with as many Springbok caps as Pienaar has meant Michael hasn’t had as much game time as he would like and I jumped in pretty quickly to cut a deal and bring him back.

“He was delighted to come back to Doncaster and has fond memories of the place, I hope the experience he’s gained playing against the likes of Toulon and Leicester last season will stand us in good stead.

“Michael will now compete for starting berth with our own Brad Field who really came in to his own towards the end of last season and it will mean massive competition at scrum half.”

On Cusack, Griffiths said: “I believe I’m right in saying that Declan is the only number 10 that scored against us last season.

“He played very well down there on the final day of the season, he’s progressed through the Munster ranks and has been a mainstay of the Plymouth team for a couple of seasons.

“Declan’s return from injury coincided with Plymouth’s upturn in form and fortunes, he also captained the side so we are gaining those leadership qualities as well.”
