There will be plenty of brotherly love at the Keepmoat next season after the Dons unveiled their latest signing.
Former Hull FC and Hull KR full back Matty Welham has joined the club and will link up with older brother Liam, who was named the player of the year last term and signed on for the new campaign.
And the 22-year-old has a lot to thank his brother for as it was Liam who initially broached the deal.
“It came about purely as a business offer,” Liam Welham said. “I rang Carl Hall and Gary Thornton and asked if we needed any more players.
“They said they were after an outside back and I recommended them to have a look at Matty, to see if they thought he could strengthen the side in order for us to pick up more victories, which is the most important thing.
“Both Carl and Gary did their homework and rang a couple of people at both Hull FC and Hull KR and the rest is history – now he is one of the Dons.
“He is a great player, I rate him above me and Kris and the Dons fans will as well when they see him in regular action.
“We haven’t played professionally together, but we have played in the off-season at amateur level and have scored tries for fun.
“Hopefully, if I earn my stripes at centre and Matty earns his stripes at full back, we will be able to show that at the Keepmoat and be a partnership in the likes of the Burgess’ and the Tomkins’.
