Super League Hull FC got the drop on the Dons in yesterday’s pre-season friendly at the Keepmoat Stadium.
The visitors, who only included a handful of first-teamers, secured a 29-28 win with a 75th minute one pointer by stand-off Jordan Abdull. They then survived a sustained spell of pressure to claim the spoils – the Dons turning down the chance to convert a late penalty.
The Dons had five new faces in their starting line-up with forwards Mitch Clark and Jack Walton both catching the eye as did young stand-off Josh Kittrick.
But it was scrum-half Richard Wilkinson and Scottish international Dave Scott who were the stand-out performers with Lee Waterman also looking eager for work.
The young Hull side made a dominant start and scored three unanswered tries as they raced into a 16-0 lead in as many minutes.
Little had been seen of the Dons in attack until second-rower Mike Kelly, who was plagued with foot injuries for much of last season, crossed from close range on 17 minutes.
Winger Stu Sanderson added the extras from out wide and he was unlucky to hit the near post after he had done well to squeeze in at the corner following a fine break Scott.
The inventive Wlkinson almost produced a second try for Sanderson with a pin-point crossfield kick.
Hull regained the initiative and well-worked tries either side of half-time left the Dons trailing 28-10.
Russ Spiers sparked off a spirited comeback with a close range converted try on 50 minutes.
Scott, playing on the wing at the time, cut inside and jinked past several defenders to score a tryout of nothing on 62 minutes.
Waterman took over the kicking duties to close the gap to just six points.
Prop Clark looked to have celebrated his Doncaster debut with a 65th minute try but there was adjudged to have been a knock on in the build-up. Hull also had a try disallowed for offside from a kick.
The Dons drew level on 70 minutes with a converted close-range try by Walton.
