Sprotbrough are targeting a top half finish in the second tier of the Yorkshire Cricket Southern Premier League as they aim to continue their ascent of the regional pyramid.

The Melton Road club, who start their Championship campaign at Oughtibridge War Memorial on Saturday, hope to build on a successful 2020 which saw them beat Aston Hall in the South Yorkshire League Championship final.

That victory marked yet another significant improvement year on year, having finished in ninth place in 2019.

Upwardly mobile Sprotbrough joined the Championship in 2018 after winning three promotions in four years.

They welcome back South African all-rounder Gordon Thomson and have added Paul Wookey from Bracebridge Heath to bolster their bowling attack. Scott Sykes has also joined from Brodsworth.

“The first team won the divisional play-off in the shortened Championship season in 2020 and will be taking this confidence into 2021 to push for a top half finish,” said first team captain Ash Ward.

“The club has made huge strides in recent years having added a third team in 2018.

“We have great strength in depth and, as such, the second and third teams are looking to be in the hunt for promotion as we continue to go from strength to strength.”

Elsewhere in the Championship, Conisbrough travel to Barnsley Woolley Miners 2 and Warmsworth start their season at Whiston Parish Church.
