Rugby League: Doncaster RLFC ace targets Challenge Cup win - and has long-term eyes on promotion

Like the rest of his Doncaster RLFC teammates, Jack Logan is hoping that they can give a better account of themselves in Sunday’s Challenge Cup fourth round tie at Workington than they did in the last round.

Dons were made to work harder than expected when they ran out winners over amateurs Thornhill Rangers in the third round.

Sunday's opponents Workington also sealed a slender win against amateur opposition. They overcame West Bowling 28-22 in a re-arranged tie last Sunday – a day when the Dons saw their league game at North Wales Crusaders called off due to a waterlogged pitch.

“Thornhill probably deserved to win and I think it was an early wake-up call,” admitted Logan.

Logan played 11 games for the Dons under a dual-registration deal with Hull FC - the first being back in 2015 - and is pleased to be back on a more permanent basis.

He knew at the start of the season that he would likely not be offered a new deal and not even the fact that he scored a hat-trick in the club’s record-breaking Easter derby win over Hull KR brought about a change of circumstances – though an elbow injury shortly after robbed him of the chance to consolidate his place in the star-studded side.

“It was always the dream to be a full-time player,” he said. “The thing about full-time sport is that it is good when things are going well, but it’s really bad when things are bad.

"The decision to go part-time wasn’t forced upon me and there were a couple of offers in and around the Super League but I wasn’t really enjoying my rugby at the time.”

Logan mainly operated at centre for the Dons in the past but is currently turning out at full-back.

“I think full-back will be my best position at Doncaster although I don’t think I’m a natural full-back and there are things that I’ve got to learn going forward.”

Although the cup has been the focus of attention in training this week, Logan admits promotion is once again the main focus going forward and hopes to help the Dons return to the Championship.

He added: “I think we have enough talent in the team to get up to the Championship.

“If we have to do that via the play-offs then so be it, but our goal is to finish top of the table and go up automatically.”
