Doncaster Knights must 'back up' Jersey display in Championship Cup quarter-final - Steve Boden

Doncaster Knights coach Steve Boden is calling for a repeat showing of Saturday’s win over Jersey in Friday’s Championship Cup quarter-final tie against Nottingham at Lady Bay.

“That’s three wins on the trot at home but what we’ve got to do is to get out of the habit of needing a big performance to cover a lacklustre one,” he said.

“That’s why Friday’s game is such a big challenge.

“The toughest thing is backing up that sort of performance especially when you’ve got a shorter turnaround.

“We’ve got to look after what we’ve got to look after and play with the same emotion, the same energy and the same drive as on Saturday.

“If we do that and also get the technical stuff right then we’ll put ourselves in a position to challenge for a win.”

Along with the rest of the coaching staff, Boden was impressed with many aspects of Knights’ performance in the 38-10 win over the fifth-placed Channel Islanders at Castle Park

“We did some good stuff with the ball, our discipline was good and we were very physical and had good attacking shape,” he said.

“We also showed some really good touches off the ball and we produced some good finishing and I thought the backs were outstanding.

“We had great work-rate, great contact and we carried hard over the gain line.

“All the flashy things we did came off the back of that. We got on the front foot and when that happens the skilful things become easier.”

Knights will name their squad tomorrow.

“Obviously we’ll be without Rory (Pitman) who came off on Saturday and Joe Sproston has gone to play in France and there might be a few other changes,” said Boden.

“But we know it’s a big game. We can’t win the league but we could win the cup.

“We’ve got some other big games coming up but, as always, we’ll be focusing on one game at a time.”
