Doncaster Hockey Club’s men beat Preston 4-1 to get their National League campaign off to a winning start.

Tim Shelley converted a penalty corner to give the home side the advantage after just three minutes.

Preston hit back just before the end of the first quarter to level the match against the run of play.

Alex Kerly put Doncaster back ahead before Shelley grabbed his second goal from the penalty spot.

With the visitors losing their discipline, Doncaster put the result beyond doubt when Haris Davenport finished off a well-worked counter attacking move.

The Town Fields side travel to Lichfield in Conference North this weekend.

Doncaster’s ladies, meanwhile, were awarded the points after Loughborough 2s failed to register all their players in time for their Conference North opener.

They host Fylde on Saturday (noon).
