Doncaster will have its first ever representation at Europe’s largest amateur boxing event this weekend.

Cantley fighter Ryan Boyle will take part in the Haringey Box Cup at London’s Alexandra Palace.

More than 300 boxers will descend on the capital on Friday for the first stages of tournament.

And 16-year-old Boyle will be among them, flying the flag for Doncaster South Amateur Boxing Club.

Coach Col Boyle believes his young charge has a chance of making an impression against the country’s elite youth fighters.

“It’s going to be a real test for Ryan but I think he will do well this weekend,” Boyle told the Free Press.

“He’s a very nice boxer and if he boxes at his best, he’ll cause plenty of problems.

“This is a fantastic experience for him, boxing at a great venue against some of the best kids in the country, and it’ll bring him on.

“It’s the final event of the season for Ryan so he’ll be determined to finish on a high.

“Then he’ll be working towards the Youth Championships in January.”

Boyle’s presence at the Box Cup is a big boost for the profile of the Doncaster South club.

Formerly housed in Rossington and run by the late David Croft, the club switched to Cantley two years ago, taking Wilby Carr Community Centre on Aldesworth Road as its home.

Boyle said: “Not many people know where we are but we’re doing well.

“We’re open three nights a week and we’re getting 20 to 25 through the door each night.

“And we regularly have professionals Jason Cunningham and Dave Allen popping in.

“Things like Ryan taking part in this really help raise our profile.

“And it’s a proud moment for all of us at the club to put up Doncaster’s first competitor in the event.”

Doncaster South ABC runs sessions on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
