Two of the world’s best players will go head-to-head in Doncaster next week to celebrate the opening of a new squash club.
Sheffield’s three-time world champion Nick Matthew will take on former world number one James Wilstrop in an exhibition match to mark the official opening of Woodfield Squash and Leisure Club at Woodfield Park on Tickhill Road.
The match will be held at 6pm on Wednesday, May 31. Tickets are available from the club by phoning 01302 639409.
Club director Matt Hudson said: “These two great players need absolutely no introduction and have reached the pinnacle of our sport so this promises to be a real treat.”
The new four-court club has earned the praise of several world ranked players.
“Only a few short years ago we were a tiny club in Hexthorpe near bankruptcy with one Vets team bottom of the Sheffield and District league,” said Matt.
“Today we have a brand new club with four state-of-the-art squash courts, massive gym, sunbed room, saunas, studio room and physiotherapy department.
“We have eight teams competing in the Sheffield and District leagues and two teams in the Yorkshire Leagues and we are topping many of the divisions and growing at a rapid rate.
“We pride ourselves on being a family club and it’s the ‘Woodfield Family’ that have made it. Everyone chipped in and helped build it and move equipment and promote it. It really is incredible.
“We recently had a visit from world number 15 Daryl Selby who was astounded at what we had done here and he is coming back in the summer to have a club night against our players.
“We’ve also received a message from professional squash player Chris Simpson saying he’d like to come over too.”
