Tennis: Wheatley clinch fine win; Doncaster C are pace-setters

Wheatley Hills netted an 8-1 win over North Scarle in their Gainsborough Evening League clash, writes Steve Hossack.

Jack Pye and John Peter (7-0, 7-2, 7-1) won all their three rubbers as did third pairing Steve Turner and Lee Ridgill (7-2, 7-4, 7-6) with Danny Hill and Joe Fielding (5-7, 7-6, 7-1) claiming victory in two of their three games.

The club also finished on the winning side (63-29) against Caistor in their North Kelsey Mixed Weekend League encounter, where rubbers are contested on a timed basis.

The Doncaster club’s only defeat came in the men’s doubles where Danny Hill and Ian Ward lost 7-6.

Pam Green and Nikki Hankinson (12-3) took the honours in the ladies’ doubles with Ward and Green (12-3, 12-3) and Hill and Hankinson (10-6, 8-7) giving the club a clean sweep in the mixed doubles.

The club recorded a 3-1 South Yorkshire LTA Ladies’ Two-Couple League win over Epworth B.

Pam Green and Rebecca Sutton won both their rubbers with Olivia Parker and Ellie Watson beating their second pairing counterparts 10-4 on a tie break.

Doncaster C continue to set a scorching pace at the top of the table with a brace of victories.

They beat Moorgate A 4-0 on their travels with Jayne Hale and Abi Rodwell and Elizabeth Morris and Pat Binstead, both netting a couple of rubbers.

They also beat visiting Epworth 4-0 with the pairings of Hale and Morris and Binstead and Laura Twidale both being unbeaten.

The club’s B team lost 3-1 at Swinden House.

Isobel Hossack and Jo Waite, beaten 6-3, 6-3 by the home club’s first pair, posted a 6-1, 6-1 over their second pair.

Sue Barrass and Julie Smith lost both rubbers (6-0, 6-0, and 6-3, 6-2).

Doncaster suffered a 6-3 Sheffield LTA Men’s Division One defeat against visiting Abbeydale. Jake Prime and Kevin Clegg bagged a brace of wins with Dave Cole and Matthew Clegg also chipping in.

The D team claimed a 5-4 Division Five win at Bradfield. Jacob Bennett and Dave Walton and William Skidmore and Chris Warren shared four of the winning rubbers with Steve Bisby and Thomas Huggins completing the Doncaster tally.

Doncaster B romped to a 9-0 Division Two win over visiting Brentwood.

Simon Causier and Chris Brocklehurst dropped only three games as they claimed all three rubbers in emphatic style.

Second pairing Steve Fairham and Rick Moglia dropped only six games in their clean sweep. Andy Jenkins and Roger Long also won all three rubbers, though they were made to work harder – especially by Brentwood’s second pair – for the spoils.

The club’s C team also posted an impressive 8-1 Division Three win over visiting Buxton.

No 1 pair Ged Salisbury and Phil Kramer and second pairing Dan Seddon and Jonathan Warren claimed six of the Doncaster rubbers with Toby Mettam and Kevin Waller chipping in with a brace.

* Wheatley Hills Lawn Tennis Club will officially open their new clubhouse extension on Sunday morning.

Mayor Ross Jones will perform the opening ceremony around 11.45am and Doncaster Central MP Rosie Winterton will also say a few words before cutting the club’s 60th anniversary cake.

“The plan is we get some of the younger members on court with coach Myles Collett practising and playing,” said chair Janet Arrowsmith.

“Some of the older juniors will perform a ‘meet and greet’ function showing guests around.”
