Doncaster Lawn Tennis Club may be reaping the rewards of Murray Mania!

The Bessacarr based club are among the many clubs around the country to have seen a membership boost in the second half of last year.

The surge in interest follows Murray’s historic victory at Wimbledon last summer.

“We enjoyed a ten per cent increase last year,” said chairman Tony Exley.

“Although whether that was down to Andy Murray, or the fact that we had a good summer, remains to be seen.”

A keen player himself, Tony says the club are hopeful of adding to their membership this year.

“We’ve kept membership fees at last year’s level and we have also maintained the 25 per cent discount for new members,” he said.

“So, if anyone is thinking of rekindling an old love for the sport, or just fancying a different form of exercise to tie in with their New Year resolutions, we’ve got new cardio tennis sessions starting later this year.

“We cater for all levels of ability from our four year-old juniors up to people in their 70s, some of whom play social tennis on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

“Our coaches are happy to cater for all abilities, either on a one-on-one basis or as part of our many junior squads.”

The club, on Saxton Avenue, run teams in several leagues throughout the year.

Interested members are encouraged to press their claims at the men’s and women’s practice nights held on Wednesday and Monday respectively.

The club, which also boasts six American clay courts, embarked on a week-long refurbishment programme of their six astroturf courts, which were laid over a decade ago, on Monday.

“After taking advice we feel that if the courts are looked after now they will probably give us another five years’ use by which time we should have built up a contingency fund to look at replacing the surfaces,” said Tony.
