Racing: Thursday’s preview

Yuften can make amends for an unlucky experience in France last time out by winning the totepool Sovereign Stakes at Salisbury.

William Haggas’ three-year-old tackles older horses for the first time, but the 7lb he receives tilts the scales very much in his favour.

A seven-length maiden winner on his return to action at Newmarket this season, it nonetheless looked like Haggas was aiming a little too high by running him in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.

However, he belied his 66-1 odds by finishing less than five lengths behind Kingman.

He showed in no uncertain terms that was no fluke next time in France was he crossed the line in second behind Charm Spirit in the Prix Jean Prat, only to be disqualified and placed fourth.

While that was a blow to connections, it confirmed they had a colt not far off the very best milers around.

He should prove the point in this Group Three.

Ada Lovelace must hold strong claims of defying a penalty in the Bill Garnett Memorial Fillies’ Handicap.

Trained by John Gallagher, the four-year-old has been busy this season but won with her head in her chest at Brighton last week.

Gallagher has Ada Lovelace out before the handicapper has had chance to reassess her and she looks by far the safest conveyance.

Glorious Empire looks sure to give us a run for our money in the July Course Handicap at Newmarket.

Ed Walker’s three-year-old has only run one bad race in his life, when he was drawn on the wrong side in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot.

He bounced back from that to win a decent handicap at Newmarket and off a 7lb higher mark he ran a perfectly respectable race at Ascot last time out.

In a field full of rapid improvers he finished fourth to Mange All, beaten just over two lengths. That showed he was still going in the right direction and this race does not look as tough.
