Racing Saturday preview: Grandeur to lift Winter Derby

Grandeur can avenge last year’s defeat in the Winter Derby at Lingfield.

Jeremy Noseda’s well-travelled gelding was sent off the 7-4 favourite in the Group Three 12 months ago, but he could only finish eighth, having endured a rough passage to the line.

The six-year-old clinically turned that form on its head a month later, though, as he held off Dick Doughtywylie by a head in the Easter Classic.

Critics will suggest Grandeur cut a meek figure upon his return to action over course and distance, when he was a laboured fourth in a Winter Derby trial in February.

That is true to a point, but very little went right for Grandeur that day and, in any event, he was almost certainly in need of a run, having been out of action since October.

With Ryan Moore renewing acquaintances, and his class at this grade not in dispute, expect Noseda’s charge to be an entirely different proposition back in Surrey.

A cogent argument can be made for Burnt Sugar in the 32Red Spring Cup.

Richard Hannon’s colt must gave weight to all of his rivals in this seven-furlong Listed heat, but that is for a reason.

The three-year-old is head and shoulders above most of these on the ratings after having shown so much promise as a juvenile that Hannon gave him the chance to shine in a Group One in France on Arc weekend.

Burnt Sugar was probably out of his depth at Longchamp, while two previous efforts at Meydan in February were also nothing to write home about.

Be that as it may, the son of Lope De Vega should be much happier back on Polytrack and at a track where he won a maiden so well last August.

Popular old-timer Carruthers looks weighted to win the Betfred Midlands Grand National at Uttoxeter.
