McDonnell triumphs over Kenyan

HATFIELD bantamweight Jamie McDonnell successfully defended his Commonwealth title with an overwhelming points victory over tough Kenyan Nick Otieno at the weekend.

McDonnell won every round on two of the judges’ cards while the other gave him the verdict by a wide 118-111 margin.

The championship fight in Sheffield on Saturday night was televised live on Sky TV and promoter Frank Maloney is keen to match McDonnell, who is also European champion, with unbeaten British title holder Stuart Hall in his next fight.

McDonnell never looked like stopping his opponent and seemed to be boxing well within himself at times but came on strong in the later rounds to outclass the Kenyan.
