Gavin McDonnell retained his British super bantamweight title after a split draw decision from a war with Josh Wale.

Both fighters gave absolutely everything in a back and forth South Yorkshire derby contest with each showing their strengths.

Wale was the aggressor and landed the more telling shots while McDonnell’s accuracy ensured he stayed in a fight that could easily have slipped away from him.

Barnsley’s Wale appeared to be in the ascendency as the mid-point of the fight passed but Doncaster rival McDonnell finished well to ensure the outcome was certainly in doubt when the final bell rang.

One judge gave McDonnell the fight by a round, another to Wale by the same margin while the final official ruled a level draw, ensuring McDonnell retained.

Boos rang out from the Leeds crowd in displeasure at the manner of the decision, with no clear winner produced.
