MEMBERS of Armthorpe Swimming Club are about to go to great lengths for Sport Relief.
In fact they are about to go several lengths!
The club have revealed plans to swim the equivalent distance from Land’s End to John O’Groats - a mere 1.4 million metres - to raise money for charity.
Beginners, speed swimmers, lifeguards and coaches from Armthorpe ASC will all take part in the swimathon next month.
The challenge is expected to take a week to complete and the average swimmer will swim up to 30km for the cause, roughly the distance from Doncaster to Sheffield.
Mandi Briggs, whose daughters Toni and Kayleigh will be among more than 200 members involved in the event, told the Free Press excitement is brewing ahead of the task.
The team manager said: “The kids are really looking forward to it.
“I’ve been at the club eight or nine years now and we haven’t really done anything like this before.
“It was an idea that came from our head coach David Holmes and hopefully it will bring everyone together for a really good cause.
“It’ll not just be our best swimmers taking part, but the children who are still learning to swim will have their lengths counted as well.
“We’re planning on making the Saturday a family day for everyone to get involved in - there’ll be raffles, cake stalls, music and a few surprises along the way.
“We’d really like parents to come down and help out by counting lengths and providing encouragement and refreshments to the swimmers.”
Armthorpe ASC are based at Armthorpe Sports Centre, Mere Lane.
The swimathon will take place during normal training sessions over the space of a week commencing from Wednesday, March 7.
They hope to secure extra pool time on the Saturday.
